House of Rasa: Queer Indonesia in Motion

Organising Lengger dance workshops, Indonesia's ancient drag tradition, for a new Indonesian queer troupe. They will perform at House of Rasa, a ballroom inspired by the Indonesian queer interpretation of "Voguing”. It involves a Lengger flashmob for the audience and new works by local Sydney’s dancers to showcase various dance genres (hip-hop, burlesque, pole, jazz funk) while incorporating elements of Lengger through the use of traditional masks or selendang — the shoulder cloth, reflecting their interpretation of Lengger.

JKT x SYD: Jakarta's Heat Meets Sydney's Beats

This event is a cultural exchange set in a club environment, representing Jakarta and Sydney as vibrant multicultural cities. It features a dance party with popular Indonesian music genres like remixed Dangdut, Keroncong, and Indo-Bounce. Roving entertainers will interact with the crowd, embodying Pesta Rakyat — a symbol of Indonesian public celebration — using props like Wayang puppets, Umbul-umbul banners, and traditional bamboo instruments such as the Angklung, synchronising with DJ rhythms. Attendees can participate by wearing traditional accessories like Selendang and Hand Fans from our costume library, immersing themselves in Indonesian cultural elements.
